Last night as I drove home, I noticed the green part of a stoplight was out. As if it were burnt out. I suddenly wondered how this is handled. Is it someone's job to drive around the city all the time looking for burnt out streetlights? If so, they're doing a good job, because I never remember noticing a burnt out light before. Is there a dispatcher downtown somewhere? What an interesting job, paying attention to stoplights. I am laughing. Or maybe police officers are supposed to pay attention and they have a special number to call to report burnt out lights. Or maybe someone depends on public reporting, in which case I feel bad, because I didn't call in the burnt out light. I don't know where to call. It is 10pm. I am alone in my car, I am laughing. This is valuable. Maybe they just change them on a schedule so they don't burn out. I wonder where the schedule is, what it looks like, who updates it. Is it in excel? Do they back it up every night? I wonder if some penny-pincher is trying to reduce staff, change the schedule to run closer to actual burn out times. Or maybe the Greenpeace movement has petitioned the bulb changers to run right up to one week prior to the expected bulb life. Maybe that's why I've actually witnessed a burnt out stoplight bulb.
